Why Blog
Why blog? #
I’ve started a blog before but stopped, so I feel compelled to remind myself why I’m doing this.
Build a Brand #
Well this is about as honest as it gets: I want a place to show people the things I’m working on, and the interesting problems I solve.
I work on some neat things and solve some interesting problems (or at least I think so!). But I once had a mentor tell me: “It’s one thing to do good work, but if you don’t tell anyone, then no one will know”.
So that’s where we are - a place where I can write about what I’m working on, and others can discover me. And I don’t just mean the “professional” me. It’s disingenuous to pretend that I only work and think about technology. So while this blog serves a commercial purpose, it’s not the only purpose.
Helping Others #
There’s 2 things that make me happy: building things, and helping people.
There’s a lot of things I do or make that don’t have any commercial value, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t helpful to someone. If I can document what I build and it helps someone, well that would make me happy! 😀
Document my Life #
I heard a legend (I hope it’s not true!) of an old greybeard saying “I’ve forgotten more than you’ve ever learned”. And while this is a humorously harsh criticism of someone, I can relate in 2 important ways: I’ve learned lots of things, and I’ve forgotten lots of things.
This isn’t helped by getting older, or the fact that my interests can be very diverse. Who can remember what problem I solved last week? Certainly not me! Hopefully the internet can.
